🧭  Home / Musings / The Slack Memo

<aside> 👉🏽 Earlier in the year an ad-hoc Slack thread started to hog the attention of my immediate team at Gojek. The Slack Memo was written in response to that.

Principles

Few principles that I use at my end when something blows up in middle of a working day.

  1. Slack creates this illusion that we need to reply to everything now - that is not the case.
  2. Replies within a permissible time range are good enough. You decide that time range.
  3. Just cause something is creating noise - doesn’t mean it needs to be replied to asap. Your core daily task(s) should be the focus always. You have committed to those. Exceptions apply.
  4. If you need time to find an answer - say so. Better to take time than reply incorrectly.
  5. It is okay to not know the answer. The goal is to find out the correct answer, collectively.
  6. Incase you made a mistake - say so. Course correcting is part of the job, finger pointing is not.
